He is William Edward and Jane Marr Gutgsell Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois and Trustee Emeritus of The Phillips Collection in Washington\, where he was the founding Director of the Center for the Study of Modern Art. He is the author of The Innocent Eye: Children's Art and the Modern Artist\; Art Since 1940: Strategies of Being\; Modern Art at the Border of Mind and Brain\; monographs on Robert Arneson\, Zhang Xiaogang\, and Alice Aycock\, among more than thirty other books and exhibition catalogs\, and Christo and Jeanne-Claude: On The Way To The Gates\, 20th Anniversary Edition which Yale is publishing in March. He also co-created Imagining America: Icons of 20th Century American Art (an award-winning PBS television documentary and a Yale University Press book)
